Femoral head has unique blood supply with a inconsistent supply from the artery of ligamentum teres and the arterial ring from the neck region. Interruption of blood supply brought on by femoral neck fracture can potentially result in avascular necrosis of the femoral head.Another common cause of AVN includes steroid therapy. However, up to a quarter of patients with AVN have no identifiable causes.
